NIU Jazz Lab Band to perform last concert

By NORTHERN STAR STAFF

After a record 14 appearances in an academic year, the NIU Jazz Lab Band will perform their last concert of the season at Boutell Memorial Concert Hall tonight at 8 p.m.

The band, under the direction of assistant music professor Rodrigo Villanueva, recently performed at seven venues in four cities in Mexico, according to a news release. The Jazz Lab Band also performed at the acclaimed Elmhurst College Jazz Festival in February along with regional festivals throughout the state.

The performance tonight will feature the music of Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer, Horace Silver, Bobby Watson and Bill Holman and will be a farewell performance for all of the students graduating in May.

Accompanying the Jazz Lab Band on trombone is NIU faculty member Tom Garling. Garling has just completed a double trombone concerto titled “Parts of the Sum of One,” according to his official Web site.

There is no cost for admission, and all ages are welcome.
