Hike in cigarette taxes may hit smokers hard
March 16, 2009
Smoking will soon get more expensive in the United States.
The tax on a pack of cigarettes will increase 62 cents on April 1, according to a Reuters article.
Smoker’s World, 818 W. Lincoln Highway, is preparing for the decline in sales by increasing prices before the required date.
Smoker’s World owner Abraham Mustafa said he increased cigarette pack prices by 75 cents and increased cartons by $7 a couple weeks ago.
Mustafa said the average pack of cigarettes is around $5 without tax. He said generic brands are generally lower, and higher brands like Marlboro are more expensive.
Cigarettes are not the only tobacco products that are going to increase in price, Mustafa said. He said cigars and “roll-your-own” tobacco will also increase in price, but he wasn’t sure of the exact number because the tax has not gone into effect.
Smoker Matt Lichterman, sophomore elementary education major, said the increase won’t affect whether he’ll keep smoking.
“I probably won’t quit,” Lichterman said, “even though I live in Chicago, and it’s $10 a pack.”
How do you feel about the increase in cigarettes?
“I don’t like it, but I think come April 1, I will probably smoke a lot less.”
