Rain, snow forced softball to just 2 games
March 2, 2009
What was supposed to be a five-game weekend in Alabama for the NIU softball team turned out to be a two-game trip mauled by inclement weather.
NIU’s first game of the Eighth Annual Magic City Classic against Samford was postponed due to rain and started the domino effect on the entire makeup of the tournament.
Instead of being scheduled to play two games on Friday and Saturday, the rain forced NIU to play three on Saturday and one on Sunday. But the Huskies would only play two of those, losing both.
In Saturday’s early-morning contest, NIU lost to host University of Alabama-Birmingham 16-13 in an offensive showdown. The football-looking score was helped by control problems by NIU pitching and defensive woes by UAB.
Andrea Colosimo started in the circle but lasted just two innings, giving up seven runs and six walks. She was relieved by Joreigh Landers who pitched the remainder of the game while giving up 9 runs (eight earned) and three walks, bringing the total to nine base on balls.
The Huskies plated 13, but only five were earned as UAB had three costly errors.
The Huskies then lost to Michigan State 10-2 in what would turn out to be NIU’s last game of the classic.
Snow forced the cancelation of NIU’s scheduled affair against Alabama State on Sunday.
