A “Good Samaritan” came to the aid of a woman being robbed in the parking lot of a convenience store Friday night.

At 10:48 p.m., the victim was walking through the 7-Eleven parking lot, 802 S. Fourth St., when she was grabbed from behind by the suspect, later identified as Keith D. Johnson, 41, of DeKalb, according to a DeKalb Police Department news release. Johnson then allegedly pulled the victim to the ground and attempted to steal her purse.

A customer at the store heard the woman screaming, went outside and saw Johnson tugging at her purse, at which point he tried to pull Johnson away, said DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler. The Good Samaritan was able to get Johnson away from the woman but was bitten on the hand by Johnson before Johnson fled, Spangler said.

After looking at video surveillance, police were able to find Johnson in his friend’s apartment in the 500 block of East Taylor Street pretending to be sleeping, Spangler said. Johnson was arrested without incident and charged with attempted robbery and aggravated battery.

The victim was not hurt, but the Good Samaritan’s hand had minor injuries from the bite.
