Gift shop robber now suspect in earlier robbery at convenience store

A DeKalb man who was arrested for an alleged robbery of La Moreliana Gift Shop, 205 N. 6th St., is now a suspect in a convenience store robbery from last summer, police said.

Denuawn Johnson, 31, was arrested Monday while getting off a bus in Memphis for allegedly robbing the gift shop on Feb. 5.

During an investigation of the robbery, police found Johnson had similar tattoos on his forearms as the suspect in a robbery at 7-Eleven, 802 S. Fourth St., on June 28, 2008. At about 2 a.m., a suspect approached the clerk with a knife, demanded money from the register and two cartons of cigarettes and ran north from the store, said DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler.

Tracking dogs found a T-shirt the suspect, who was described as a black male, between 180 and 200 pounds, about 6-feet tall, wearing a black shirt and pants, was wearing around his face.

“The tattoos alone are not the only evidence,” Spangler said. “I can’t comment on other evidence, but we have quite a bit of very substantial evidence linking him to the 7-Eleven robbery.”

Video surveillance from the 7-Eleven robbery showed the suspect had distinctive tattoos on his forearms, which are similar to Johnson’s, Spangler said. No one has been charged for the 7-Eleven robbery, Spangler, who anticipates charges in the future, said.

Investigators have also identified the second suspect involved in the La Moreliana robbery as a former DeKalb resident who is now believed to be living in another city near Chicago, Spangler said. Through interviews in the investigation, police learned the identity of the man whose name is not being released, Spangler said.

On Feb. 5 at about noon, Johnson and the unnamed suspect entered the gift shop, displayed a knife and demanded money from the employee before running from the store. Johnson was identified with the help of a store clerk who recognized Johnson as a previous customer who had cashed a check at the store.

The knife used has not been recovered, Spangler, who believes Johnson discarded it somewhere been DeKalb and Aurora, said.
