Men’s tennis dominates weekend matchup

Men’s tennis:

Domination was the name of the game Sunday for NIU men’s tennis as the Huskies blanked in-state rival Bradley University, 7-0. The Huskies won their first doubles point of the season and went undefeated in singles play at the Clock Tower Resort in Rockford.

“We really came out with an energetic effort in doubles and picked up some momentum,” said NIU head coach Pawel Gajdzik. “It was great to win our first doubles point of the season, and it allowed us to play a little bit more relaxed in singles play.”

The men will continue action Friday when they will host Eastern Illinois University.

Women’s tennis:

It was a bittersweet Sunday afternoon for NIU sophomore Martina Schnaap as she won the first singles victory of her career. It came in a losing effort for the Huskies, however, as they were defeated 5-2 by Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Schnaap scored a 7-6, 6-5 victory over SIU’s Ame Blacketer to notch her first singles victory as a Huskie.

“I was really proud of how we battled, especially in singles play. Martina [Schnaap] and [freshman] Emily [Rogers] really played great matches,” said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell.

Women’s track and field:

After defeating Bowling Green at the Central Michigan University Quadrangular two weekends ago, the NIU women’s track team will be looking to build even more momentum as they travel to Muncie, Ind. this Friday for the Ball State Quadrangular. The meet will be the final action for the Huskies before the MAC Indoor Championships on Feb. 27 and 28.
