A night of food, drinks and fun at Fatty’s Pub and Grille turned into fortune for one lucky DeKalb resident on Saturday night.

Debra Scott was not only one of the 32 contestants selected in the Illinois Lottery Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament; she won. Her prize? $500.

The tournament began with those wanting a chance to compete signing up at 10 p.m.

BOB FM’s Gail Fisher then drew 32 names to start round one.

Sycamore resident Megan Fowlkes, who was at Fatty’s, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway, to celebrate her birthday, fell out in the first round.

“My goal was not to throw scissors right away,” Fowlkes said. “I did win a free T-shirt and wristband so it’s not so bad.”

After four rounds it was down to Scott and NIU graduate student De’Andre Nunn for the chance to win the cash.

“I was just paying attention to what other people were playing,” Scott said. “My trick is not to think about it too much.”

The championship round started off slowly for Scott, losing the first game rock to paper.

Scott rebounded in the next two games winning rock to scissors and paper to rock to claim the grand prize.

Nunn didn’t walk away empty handed, receiving a one-night stay at Granite Peak Ski Area in Wisconsin.

“I recently just got engaged and will probably use the money for the wedding,” Scott said.

Fatty’s was approached a few weeks ago by the Illinois Lottery and asked if it wanted to host the event, said manager Brian White.

DeKalb was the 15th of 16 stops they were making around Illinois to promote the new Rock, Paper, Scissors instant win card, said Anton Downing, Illinois Lottery representative and referee.

According to the Illinois Lottery Web site, the tournament began Jan. 15 at Emerald Loop, 216 N. Wabash in Chicago and will end Feb. 26 in Chicago at Victory Liquors, 2610 N. Halsted St.
