Local robber arrested in Memphis

A DeKalb man was arrested Monday in Memphis, Tenn. for allegedly robbing La Moreliana Gift Shop, 205 N. Sixth St.

Police arrested Denuawn Johnson, 31, at about 10 p.m. Monday getting off a bus in Memphis that police believe he took to flee DeKalb after the robbery.

On Feb. 5 at about noon, Johnson and another man entered the gift shop, displayed a knife, took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the store.

Johnson and the other man were last seen running east on Oak Street.

Investigators identified Johnson through the help of a clerk at the store, who recognized the man and knew he had cashed a check at the store before, said DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler.

“He had been in there often enough to be recognized, not by name, but we had to do a lot of leg work to determine who it was,” Spangler said.

“It helped that the suspect had been in the store before.”

After identifying Johnson, police learned that he was on a bus heading to Memphis, Spangler said. Memphis Police arrested Johnson without incident as he was getting off the bus.

Police are still searching for the second suspect, who, during the robbery, stood by and did not say anything while Johnson displayed a knife and took the cash.

Police are currently investigating the identity of the second robbery suspect and have quite a few good leads in the investigation, Spangler said.
