A 13-year-old Sycamore Middle School student is in custody after a bomb threat at the school Wednesday.

Sometime during the day, Sycamore Police were called by the middle school staff about a message written on the wall in a girls’ bathroom at the school, 150 Maplewood Drive. The message contained a date and made a reference to a bomb, according to a Sycamore Police Department news release.

After an investigation, the 13-year-old student was taken into custody and referred to Juvenile Court for disorderly conduct and criminal damage to government property. A second 13-year-old student, who was also involved, was referred to Sycamore School Administration for disciplinary action.

Police did not find any evidence that an explosive device actually existed or any student was in danger, according to the release.

This threat followed shortly after a similar incident at Sycamore High School, according to the release.

Disorderly conduct is a Class 3 felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $25,000 fine, and criminal damage to government property is a Class 4 felony, punishable by up to three years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
