Local residents can receive help with taxes
February 17, 2009
Getting taxes done without having to pay very much is crucial to a lot of people.
Tax day is just two months away, and people are already scrambling fast to make sure they get their tax returns in.
Several locations throughout DeKalb County are helping local residents with their tax returns.
DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St., is one of the places assisting others for free.
Dee Coover, director of DeKalb Public Library, said the library is serving as a place with volunteers helping residents.
“We are not the ones who are helping with tax returns,” Coover said. “Our function is a place for people to work on their tax returns.”
Coover said the library has been doing their part for some time.
“We have been doing this now for several years,” she said.
The library offers tax help every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. until tax day.
Coover said the library has been a hot spot on Saturday mornings regarding the tax return help.
“It has been extremely popular,” she said. “This past Saturday by the time we had opened up, there were already people lined up to get in.”
Some people use alternative methods to help do their taxes.
DeKalb resident Devin Arendt said he prefers to use TurboTax, computer software used to do taxes.
“I choose to do my taxes online with TurboTax because it’s cheaper for me by far,” Arendt said.
Arendt said the only drawback to using TurboTax is it takes longer for him to get money back.
“Although it takes longer for me to get money back, it’s worth the wait,” he said.
Jennifer Mejia, senior math education major, said she uses efile.com to do her tax returns.
“I used efile.com because it’s a free option in doing your taxes,” Mejia said.
