The Rant: Brett Favre

By CHRIS DERTZ

There should be a disclaimer before I get into this: I am a lifelong Packers fan, and I love Brett Favre as much as anyone has loved any athlete — ever. Maybe even more than his wife, Deanna.

That’s why it should really resonate when I say this: I don’t want to hear anymore about Brett Favre telling the Jets he was retiring yesterday.

I went through purgatory, Hades and back last offseason as Favre pulled at the collective heartstrings of Packer Nation. I had heard enough Favre-retirement talk for three lifetimes and still he wouldn’t go away. Through everything he did to affect the Packers, I still loved the guy, and that’s about as unconditional as it can get.

So no, I don’t care that Brett Favre is (supposedly) retiring. I don’t care that Favre will (apparently) not be playing football next year, and I won’t watch his retirement press conference from New York.

All because, to me, Brett Favre left football when he left Green Bay. That’s how it is for me, and I’m OK with it. I have a feeling a lot of other Packers fans are OK with it, too.
