The DeKalb City Council approved several ordinances Monday night regarding DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport, 3232 Pleasant St.

The city of DeKalb will enter a 50-year land lease agreement with M&E, LLC of DeKalb, Inc. The land will be used for construction of an air park.

This air park will be modeled after Aurora Airport and consist of numerous airplane hangars, taxiways and related improvements, said Rick Monas, director of public works.

“There are no public dollars in this project,” Monas said. “It is all private revenue.”

Monas is hopeful this project will bring more money to the city.

“The more aircrafts that are based in DeKalb, the more revenue coming in,” Monas said.

The council also approved purchasing the property at 13239 Barber Greene Road in DeKalb. This is the second step in a four-step process to secure the Runway Protection Zone for Runway End 20.

The council also passed a consideration to restructure the Community Development Department.

There are currently six vacant positions within the city that will not be filled in the foreseeable future to help cut costs to the city.

These positions are two police officers, a firefighter, a fire chief, a property maintenance inspector and a community development director.

The city will be promoting current assistant fire chief Bruce Harrison to fire chief and while his current position will remain vacant.

“Seven percent of the city’s work force has been reduced since June,” said City Manager Mark Biernacki.

Acting Mayor Kris Povlsen stressed the fact that this will not be permanent.

“I’m hoping a year from now we’ll be able to look at hiring these people,” Povlsen said. “This is a short-term fix.”
