Hockey club continues losing streak

It was the same old song this weekend for the Huskies Hockey Club.

Two losses over the weekend to Lake Forest College extended NIU’s losing streak to a season-high eight games.

On Friday, the Huskies lost 3-1 on a poor offensive showing. A Greg Bahnsen goal off a Peter Alfano assist was the Huskies’ only scoring on the night.

“We just couldn’t get the offense going,” said Club President Ian Kalanges.

The Forresters (5-8) scored two goals on 41 shots against freshman goalie Kenny Schatz with their third goal coming on an empty net in the final seconds of the contest.

On Saturday, the offense awoke from Friday night’s slumber, building a 4-0 lead early in the game with two goals coming from sophomore Mike Sible. Mike Mannina and Mike Strumberger also added to the onslaught. But the early lead may have loosened the Huskies’ defense as the Forresters scored four unanswered goals to force overtime and eventually win it in a shootout.

A glaring statistic in Saturday’s contest was NIU’s 19 penalties to Lake Forest’s nine.

“It just seemed like we couldn’t catch a break with the officials,” Kalanges said. “It seemed like they called small things on us, and [Lake Forest] would do the same thing and get away with it.”

The Huskies (10-19-2, 3-3) now come home for the first time this semester to face St. Louis University at 9 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday at Leaf’s Ice Centre in West Dundee.
