With some movies, it’s all in the name. “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” is about exactly what the title suggests as Kevin Smith returns with this unconventional romantic comedy.

Zack (Seth Rogen) and his sexy roommate who’s “just a friend,” Miri (Elizabeth Banks), run out of money and decide to make a smut film to help pay the rent. To pull it off, they call on the help of some people who know exactly what they’re doing.

Katie Morgan and Traci Lords, two women who are no strangers to erotic films in real life, play Stacey and Bubbles, two of the stars of the erotic film.

As the male lead in the “porno,” Kevin Smith enlisted the help of his old friend Jason Mewes, better known as the “Jay” to Smith’s “Silent Bob.” Though he would not usually be considered a heartthrob by any means, with his long, ratty blonde locks sheared off, and the skull cap and baggy clothes ditched, the toned and tattooed Mewes is almost unrecognizable.

Having Mewes and Jeff Anderson, another Smith cohort, in the cast made the film feel like a classic View Askew production, even without Jason Lee and Ben Affleck. In the style of his other movies, he mixes over-the-top gross-out humor with a heartfelt romance subtly woven throughout.

But is Smith’s patented formula enough to make this a modern day classic? Though “Zack and Miri” is vastly different from his previous works, his latest endeavor has what it takes.

Although dialogue-driven, the film is much faster paced than “Clerks” or “Chasing Amy,” and the plot is light-hearted and funny, which will make this one easy to watch time and again, much like the underrated “Mallrats.”

Casting Elizabeth Banks as the leading lady was a good move by Smith, as she brought so much to the free-spirited Miri. Her warm, yet sarcastic nature will make her a stand-out actress in his line of films, and it could be one of the roles that helps propel her into being a major movie actress. Last week we saw her in “W,” this week in “Zack and Miri,” and next week she will be in “Role Models.” With her already impressive body of work, she may just become one of the iconic leading lady’s of tomorrow.

“Zack and Miri Make a Porno” is a raunchy comedy with heart, but it isn’t for the timid viewer who is faint of heart as the stomach-churning scenes and massive amounts of nudity are not suitable for all viewers.

However, those who can handle it are up for a laugh-out-loud comedy that will take you back to the days when Kevin Smith was in his prime.
