Get better soon, ‘NOW’
November 13, 2008
Now that’s what I call a lame album.
The pop music collection juggernaut, “NOW That’s What I Call Music,” has released a new album, the 29th in the series.
The “NOW” series should have called it quits years ago, but almost biannually, a new album is released.
As Top 40 music becomes more cliché and repetitive, so do the songs that “NOW” chooses to release on albums.
Obviously, they should be the most popular songs at the time, because isn’t that the reason people actually buy those albums?
But Katy Perry and Lil Wayne? Seriously?
The fact that some of these songs are even considered worthy enough to be put on this album says a lot also about what the public considers popular music.
The more popular songs on the album include Pink’s “So What,” Perry’s “Hot and Cold,” and Rihanna’s “Disturbia.” While these tracks may not be bad by themselves, when they are combined with other songs, a dull mix of cyclical songs is created.
Over the years, the type of music that is listed on the “NOW” albums has changed drastically.
The original “NOW” contained diverse bands such as Marcy Playground, Tonic and Cherry Poppin’ Daddies.
“NOW 29” features mostly rap and hip-hop, with just a few extremely overplayed pop songs.
There are also the one or two country songs, a surefire way to sell the album to a diverse crowd.
It’s difficult to pick out the few songs that stand out, considering they all were overplayed either at parties or on the radio in general.
However, if you’re into music that defines the last two months of every popular radio station, then check on “NOW 29.”
On the other hand, if you’re just after a playlist that will go along with your monotonous walk to class every day, this album works for that too.
