Rebounding is the difference in split weekend for NIU

Rebounding was the difference for the Huskies, as they split their weekend tournament at Seton Hall.

NIU defeated Wagner, 70-56, on Saturday; but lost to University of Maryland Baltimore County, 88-73, on Friday.

The Huskies (2-2) were out-rebounded 41-35 in their loss to UMBC (2-2). Against Wagner (2-2), however, NIU took control of the glass, grabbing 52 boards to Wagner’s 16.

NIU center Ebony Ellis was a main contributor in the Huskies’ rebound effort. The sophomore grabbed six rebounds against UMBC, placing her second on the team. The center then exploded against Wagner, bringing down a game and career high of 22 rebounds.

Huskie guard Jessie Wilcox scored the most points this weekend, putting up 27 points off the bench. Close behind was Ellis who provided 25 points in the two games. For her performance, Ellis was named to the all-tournament team.

One aspect of the game that NIU struggled with this weekend was turnovers.

Against UMBC, the Huskies turned the ball over 30 times compared to 15 assists.

Things didn’t improve much in their victory over the Seahawks, as the Huskies lost the ball 32 times, while only producing 12 assists.

“It’s a work in progress,” said NIU head coach Carol Owens in reference to her team’s ball control. “I know we’ll get better. We always have. We always struggled early with turnovers last year and we got better as the season went on.”
