Unusually warm weather to come to an end

Students across campus have responded to this week’s warm weather accordingly, but the time to wear the t-shirt and shorts may be short-lived.

Gilbert Sebenste, NIU meteorologist, explained that the recent high temperatures were caused by warm air coming from the Gulf of Mexico.

He said the fickle weather is not normal for this time of year. While the high temperatures haven’t set any records, this week’s averages are far greater than those of last year’s.

“The very warm weather that we had is not normal, and we’ve come close to, but have never hit, any high-temp record over the last three days,” Sebenste said. “We’ve come close but not quite.”

The average high for early November is 49 degrees, while the average low is around 32 degrees. This past week’s high was 73 degrees with lows ranging between 48 and 53 degrees.

Sebenste said everyone he knows has enjoyed the nice weather but expects that to change over the weekend as a cold front moves in, bringing strong winds and snow.

“I haven’t had any complaints until today,” Sebenste said. “The complaint department is going to get a lot busier when the snow starts flying tomorrow night.”
