Police patrol to double throughout DeKalb for homecoming weekend
October 16, 2008
Police patrols will double homecoming weekend in anticipation of a high number of visitors and emergency calls.
About two or three times as many officers will patrol starting at about 7 p.m. Friday night until Sunday morning, said DeKalb Police Sgt. Jim McDougall. Officers from Sycamore, Cortland and Illinois State Police Departments and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Officers will patrol, McDougall said.
Cortland Police will patrol on the east side of town, Sycamore Police on the north side and
Sycamore Road, while DeKalb County and Illinois State Police will assist in calls and foot patrols, said DeKalb Police Chief Bill Feithen.
Officers will also be stationed at businesses where students and visitors congregate to help the
flow of traffic, Feithen said.
About 75 to 100 additional officers are expected to be in town in addition to normal patrols, Feithen said.
State Police will also help keep traffic flowing at the intersection of West Lincoln Highway and Annie Glidden and the intersection of Annie Glidden and Lucinda Avenue.
“Our mission is to keep everyone safe and traffic moving,” McDougall said. “We know its going to be a late night and early morning, and we’re going to have extra patrol out there for that.”
Typically during homecoming week, police see an increase in alcohol related crimes and overall call volume, based on the fact there are more people in town drinking alcohol, said DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler.
“The increased police presence, we think, has an impact on the level of rowdiness,” Spangler said. “If enough people see the police around, they are less likely to act up.”
University Village Apartments, 722 N. Annie Glidden Road, are restricting entrance into their property for the weekend, but it is not being required by DeKalb Police, McDougall said. Security guards will be stationed at every entrance of the property to check if people are residents before entering, McDougall said.
The roads near Douglas, Lincoln and Grant South residence halls will be restricted to delivery and emergency vehicles only from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday, said University Police Lt. Todd Henert.
Parking will be restricted on Greenbrier Road from Normal Road to Hillcrest Drive during the weekend to ease the travel of emergency vehicles down Greenbrier, McDougall said.
