Volleyball to face conference leader Western Michigan
October 29, 2008
The NIU volleyball team will face its biggest test tonight.
The Huskies (14-10, 6-4) are hosting Mid-American Conference leader Western Michigan (18-3, 9-1) tonight at 7 p.m. at Victor E. Court. The Broncos won the first meeting this season in straight sets.
“We know what they’re capable of doing because they’re the same team as they were before,” said NIU head coach Ray Gooden.
NIU is 8-2 this season at home, but have not had the best luck with WMU in the past. Since 2001, the Huskies are 2-10 against the Broncos, including a 1-4 record at home. That lone home win came on November 3, 2001.
After a great weekend in Ohio, freshman Allison McGlaughlin looks to continue a hot streak. McGlaughlin has tallied 268 kills, a .222 hitting percentage and 28 serving aces.
Freshman Kristin Hoffman guides the offense and, after this past weekend, is the leader on the team with 484 assists.
WMU enters tonight’s match on a six-game winning streak. The Broncos are the MAC leader in hitting percentage with .245, opponent hitting percentage with .147, assists with 13.05 per set, kills with 14.21 per set and digs with 16.97 per set.
“I think that they are efficient and relentless,” Gooden said. “They’re the best team in our league right now.”
The tough WMU offense is led by outside hitter Michelle Moore. Moore has compiled 307 kills with 3.99 kills per set and a .223 hitting percentage.
Junior Jillian Mitchell directs the Bronco offense with her MAC leading 861 assists and 11.18 assists per set. Libero Caitlin Strimel fronts the defense with her MAC leading 409 digs and 5.31 digs per set.
“They play at a higher level,” said Gooden. “We know what we have to do in order to be successful against them.”
All tickets for the game are $1, and students are free. At the game, there will be a costume contest, and raffles and drawings will occur throughout the game. Prizes include two Jason Aldean tickets, various gift certificates from DeKalb area businesses and scary movie DVDs.
