NIU cross country and men’s tennis place over weekend

Sunsea Shaw continued to lead the NIU cross country team with a 35th place finish on Friday at the Bradley Cross Country Classic.

“Sunsea continues to improve each meet,” said NIU cross country coach Connie Teaberry. “She strives to be our top runner every meet. An athlete with an attitude like that is definitely bringing the other athletes along.”

Denisse Valladares was second for the Huskies in 69th place, Breanna Brevitt was third in 70th place and Ashley Rittenbacher finished in 71st place. Meghan Ginter rounded out the top five for NIU in 75th place.

As a team, NIU finished in 14th, with 344 points, defeating University of Wisconsin-Green Bay by 18 points.

The cross country team will be back in action at the end of the month at the MAC Championships on Nov. 1 in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Other news:

• The NIU men’s tennis team competed in the ITA Regionals on Thursday and Friday but did not send anyone through to Saturday.

In qualifying rounds on Thursday, sophomore Matt Hansen defeated Youngstown State’s Michael Kathary 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 but fell to Ra’ees Ismail of Xavier 3-6, 4-6 in the second round.

In doubles, freshman Ross VanderPloeg and Hansen fell 6-8 to Minnesota, while senior Alfonso Monroy and Bernabe won their first round match 8-5 against IPFW. The duo dropped a 1-8 decision to Notre Dame in round two.

Fall competition will wrap up for the Huskies on Oct. 24 in Milwaukee, Wis., at the Marquette Fall Invitational.
