Huskies fall to Wisconsin 1-0

With a 1-0 loss on Wednesday night, the NIU men’s soccer team snapped a six-game home winning streak versus Wisconsin (9-6-2).

With 30 minutes left in the first half, the Badgers’ Scott Lorenz posted the only goal of the game after a long ball into the box was played over goalkeeper Joe Zimka’s head.

Zack Lambo assisted on the goal that gave Wisconsin its first win in DeKalb since 1995.

NIU outshot the Badgers 16-6 for the game while posting four shots on goal, without a score.

In the final minutes of the game, after a yellow card on Wisconsin’s Victor Diaz, Danny Lopez’s shot sailed just wide of the net, on the best scoring opportunity for a Huskies goal.

Defensively the Huskies limited Wisconsin to just two shots on goal.

“Story of the year,” Drew Jeskey said of the Huskies’ defense. “We just made one or two mistakes in the back and they ended up scoring.”

Jeskey said the team has consistently battled back and outplayed opponents in the second half of the game after going down in the first half.

“We always end up having to chase,” Jeskey said. “I don’t know what it’s going to take but we always end up down in the first half.”

NIU head coach Steve Simmons said the Huskies didn’t make their plays during the match and Wisconsin executed just one play for the win.

“We just didn’t make enough plays,” Simmons said. “They had one play and made it. We had multiple chances but we didn’t make our plays and that’s just not good enough.”

Simmons said the gameplan against the Badgers was to outwork the , which he said they did at some parts of the game, but added the team did not make plays and did not perform well on the mental aspect of the game.

“You have to be dialed in mentally and we didn’t dial in mentally,” Simmons said. “That’s not how we wanted to perform.”

The loss sends the Huskies to 8-4-4 on the season. The team will travel to Duke on Sunday for its next game as the Huskies continue to prepare for the MAC Tournament, starting Nov. 13.
