Intercollegiate Athletics inducts new hall of fame members

NIU Intercollegiate Athletics will enshrine one team and four individuals into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 17 as part of the Huskies’ 102nd Homecoming weekend.

The formal induction ceremonies will once again take place at the Duke Ellington Ballroom in the Holmes Student Center, Jeff Compher, NIU associate vice president and director of athletics, announced.

NIU’s 2008 induction class — the 27th overall since the inception of the Huskie Athletics Hall of Fame and the 30th anniversary of the charter HOF group in 1978 — features the 1972 baseball team, plus individuals Jeremy Goeden (wrestling in 1996-98), Tammy Hinchee (basketball in 1986-90), Anne Mucci (Iwinski) (soccer in 1995-98) and Larry Satchwell (track & field in 1974-75).

“Heartiest congratulations to our newest Hall of Fame inductees,” said Compher. “While I may be, so to speak, the new guy on the block, I certainly understand the significance of such an honor.

The team and individual accomplishments of these inductees are awe-inspiring. Not only is such Hall-of-Fame recognition well-deserved, but their stories provide great examples for our current Northern Illinois student-athletes. I look forward to meeting our old and new Hall of Fame inductees. From my understanding, our induction banquet has a great cardinal and black history and flavor.”

As in the past, the Friday evening NIU Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Banquet precedes the 102nd Homecoming Game on Oct. 18 against Mid-American Conference rival University of Toledo at 3 p.m. at Huskie Stadium.

In addition, the new Hall-of-Famers will be honored on the field at halftime of the NIU-UT contest.

Fans, friends, alumni and the general public are invited to attend the HOF induction on Friday night.

The festive cardinal and black evening begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The cost for the banquet is $50. Table sponsorships, seating eight individuals, are available for $500 a piece.

For further information on the banquet or to RSVP, please contact Matt Mattmiller in NIU Athletics Development by telephone (AC 815-753-5510) or by e-mail at [email protected].

For the 23rd consecutive year, Bill Baker, the voice of NIU football and basketball on the Huskie Radio Network since 1980, will serve as banquet emcee.

As per tradition, many past NIU Hall of Fame inductees will attend the ceremony and be introduced.

Expected to attend this year’s banquet will be T. C. Dantzler, a two-sport NIU standout in football and wrestling who qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics in Greco-Roman wrestling at age 37.

Dantzler was inducted in 2004.
