The NIU men’s tennis team came away from the Ball State Invitational this weekend with successful results.

Freshman Ross VanderPloeg won the Flight D singles final and finished the weekend with a 4-0 record.

The team opened up the invite with seven singles matches on Friday and won all of them. Sophomore Matt Hansen advanced to the quarterfinals with two wins in Flight A singles.

Junior Javier Bernabe and senior Alfonso Monroy won two matches each as well. Bernabe was competing in Flight B and Monroy was competing in Flight C, and both advanced to their Flight’s quarterfinals.

VanderPloeg won his only match of the day against David Lynall of IPFW 6-0, 6-1.

The second day did not go as well as the first day for the Huskies, but was still very encouraging.

Hansen won his quarterfinals match 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (5), but lost in the semis to Pjotrs Nacajevs of Detroit Mercy 3-6, 4-6.

Bernabe and Monroy lost in their quarterfinal matches. Bernabe lost 6-7 (5), 7-6 (6), 0-1 (7) to Paul Foley of Ball State. Monroy lost to Luis Maselli of IPFW 6-7 (5), 7-5, 0-1 (5).

VanderPloeg won both of his Saturday matches to advance to the finals. He defeated Mike Koscielski of Dayton 6-2, 7-6 (6) in the quarterfinals and Miceh LeMoine of Illinois State 6-0, 6-2 in the semis.

Doubles matches began on Saturday with NIU sending two teams to compete. Both Huskie teams advanced to the quarterfinals where they both fell.

The team of Hansen and VanderPloeg beat Lorenzo Lig and Jon Sigurdsson of Indiana State 8-4, but lost to Filip Mijljevic and Reichelt of Illinois State 5-8.

The other NIU team of Bernabe and Monroy defeated Derek Carpenter and Thomas Dave of Ball State 9-7, but went down to Richard Canelaas and Anthony Palmenter of IPFW 5-8.

The final day saw VanderPloeg matched up with Gustavo Villares of Duquesne. The Flight D championship went to VanderPloeg with a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
