The NIU volleyball team is hosting Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend starting tonight at the Convocation Center.

“We’re at a time where there are other things besides our sport that are really important,” said NIU head coach Ray Gooden.

The Recreation Center will be sponsoring a yoga class from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and a kickboxing class from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Convo’s lobby before the game.

Anyone who participates in the classes will receive free admission to the game.

The first 100 fans to each game will also receive a free “Dig Pink” NIU volleyball t-shirt.

The Huskies (10-8, 2-2) will open up a four game home stand at 7 p.m. tonight against Ball State (7-11, 3-1).

NIU is 7-1 at home this season and has won the last five.

Under Gooden, the Huskies are 5-1 at home against the Cardinals and have won the last five meetings.

Outside hitter Meagan Schoenrock continues to front the NIU attack with 295 kills, 4.84 kills per game and a .254 hitting percentage.

Ball State is currently on a three-match winning streak, including one against Eastern Michigan, who recently beat the Huskies.

“They always play tough,” Gooden said. “They’re playing with their highest level of confidence.”

Ball State’s leading defender is sophomore Alyssa Rios with 275 digs.

Junior outside hitter Julie Breivogel leads the Cardinal offense with 194 kills.

NIU will finish off the weekend tomorrow night against Toledo (9-8, 1-3) at 7 p.m.
