Vice presidential candidates’ debate performance lackluster

By KAYLA KLING

If you watched the Vice Presidential debate you know it wasn’t the most exciting one. The debate seemed a bit lackluster after it was sensationalized Palin would not be able to keep up with Biden.

It ended up being more name-calling and finger pointing than informative. But did it at least live up to its basic expectations?

After the infamous Katie Couric interview where Governor Sarah Palin struggled to answer direct questions, viewers predicted she would fall flat on her face in the debate.

“When [Palin] has prepared material, [her speeches go] over extremely well: not as good off the cuff as seen in the Katie Couric interview,” said assistant communication professor Bill Cassidy.

In a battle of experience more than anything, Palin struggled at times to keep her head above water as expected. However, she clearly prepared more for the debate by remaining competent enough to keep level-headed and respond to the questions.

Mike Peddle, associate political science professor, only partially agreed with the quality of Palin’s debating skills.

“On substance, Biden was the clear winner,” Peddle said. “Palin’s style will resonate with Americans, but [her speech was] short on substance. I think she did a very poor job answering the questions directly.”

Even as a supporter of the McCain-Palin ticket, I have to somewhat agree with Prof. Peddle. Palin started off strong, especially with her points on the financial crisis, but ended with weak answers to questions.

Biden fired back at any accusation by Palin and showed his experience as a senator.

Brownie points are awarded to her, however, in her support of running mate Senator John McCain. Biden seemed to concentrate more on his credentials than Obama’s, but then again, he has more experience than Palin and Obama.

The debate did not clearly state all the issues or where each candidate stands. The debate didn’t even provoke enough emotion for people to change their candidate of choice, especially this late in the game.

Educate yourself on the issues if you haven’t already. Learn where the candidates stand and vote.

It’s less than a month until ‘go time’ so be prepared when Election Day finally rolls around.
