How to be a good Huskie fan

By ANDREA BRADLEY

After a close game with Minnesota, NIU has shown its fans that they are here to compete.

But, playing at the Metrodome was rough. The Gopher band, fans and team created a loud atmosphere, making it hard for the Huskies to play on Minnesota’s home turf.

It’s about time for NIU to make their house one of the hardest places to play in the MAC. Below are 10 tips to make you a better football fan, and to help make DeKalb a rough road stadium.

1. Attend the games.

Get to the field and support your team. The team doesn’t put in all the hard work for itself. They are representing the school, and you should do the same.

2. Wear your school colors.

The cheerleaders hold up the “Red” and “Black” signs for a reason. Cardinal and black are Huskie colors, so wear them. There’s nothing worse than wearing a designer T-shirt with the other team’s yellow and blue. That’s just poor planning.

3. Tailgate.

Take time out of your day to meet new people before the game. Most Greek and student organizations are represented during the tailgate, so get out there and look at your options. Meeting people is fun, and what’s better than free food?

4. Don’t leave at halftime.

The football team can’t leave, so you shouldn’t either. Once again, they worked hard for this. Two-a-days have conditioned the team to play the whole game; the least you can do is stay in your seat.

5. Make a sign.

Let your creative side show. Tired of the “D” and the picket fence? Create a new fan favorite. Hey, if you’re good, you may even make it on ESPN when Navy comes to town. And even if you’re not inventive, you can still have fun. Stick with the simplicity of the “Hi Mom!” (Hey Mom!)

6. Get up and cheer.

When the cheerleaders point your way, show them you are watching. What’s the point of home field advantage if they can’t hear you? Scream when the other team is in the offensive huddle. If the wide receiver doesn’t hear the play call, it may just end up as an interception.

7. Become a band accessory.

When the band plays the fight song, sing along. Let everyone know you are a Huskie. Don’t know the fight song? Find a fellow student who does. Do what they do — you may end up looking like a professional.

8. Don’t bring a cow bell.

Those are just annoying. You can cheer louder.

9. Body paint isn’t that hard to wash off.

OK, maybe it is, but that hasn’t stopped some of the best die-hards. Go half red, half black, paint the logo or do a new fun design. Just use the school colors and stay away from white on your face. White never makes your teeth look appealing.

10. Have fun.

This is the most important factor by far. If you are having fun, the rest will come naturally.
