‘My Best Friend’s Girl’ not worth price of popcorn

“My Best Friend’s Girl” – 3/10

Starring: Dane Cook, Kate Hudson, Jason Biggs

Director Howard Deutch’s latest film “My Best Friend’s Girl,” fails to live up to the genius of the director’s work in the 1986 film “Pretty In Pink.”

The first mistake of the film was using such a generic plot line. Nerdy character Dustin (Biggs) tries so hard to impress Alexis (Hudson), but always fails. So he has his best friend Tank (Cook) treat her horribly, which then makes it totally obvious that Alexis will follow the typical Hollywood scenario and fall for Tank.

The plot stands absolutely unoriginal and leaves nothing for the audience to anticipate.

Adding to the first mistake of the film, it is no wonder the film bored movie-goers as the characters did not draw the viewer into the movie. With a cast jam-packed with well known stars, including a supporting role from Alec Baldwin, it’s a shame that the characters were not more appealing.

The character Tank comes off as arrogant and obnoxious which really makes the viewer hate him. As the film goes on, it is hard to let go of the already formed opinion of the character no matter how nice of a character he ends up being in the end.

Tank manipulates girls in the beginning which makes the audience more standoffish to his greater attributes. Certainly, this was not Dane Cook’s best role, and his co-star Jason Biggs suffers the same fate.

Biggs’ character Dustin is annoying from scene one as he tries way too hard to get Alexis to fall for him. He ends up not gaining the sympathy of the audience, and instead ends up pestering the viewer.

Hudson is the one casting choice that was done right as she adds comedy, style and grace to Alexis, but she unfortunately upstages her co-stars.

Hopefully, Cook will keep to his stand-up comedy and leave the acting business alone, otherwise, he may want to re-read the script before signing on to another flop.

For Jason Biggs it might be smart of him to try making another “American Pie” movie and let go of his hopes to star with any other cast for the time being.

It may be hard for both guys to come back from this embarrassing movie. Yet, the movie did have an entertaining charm if the viewer went in expecting to see a cheesy movie with annoying characters and a lapsed plot line.
