New ABC game show tests family knowledge

By KYLE SPENCER

ABC’s brand new show “Opportunity Knocks” proves itself worthy enough to be called “this falls smartest new game show.”

“Knocks” is based simply around the question: “How well do family members know one another?”

The series travels around the United States knocking on the door of families that have entered for a chance to win the $250,000 grand prize. After the family has been selected, the television crew arrives in their neighborhood and constructs an elaborate game show set on the family’s front lawn. The last thing to do to prepare is to invite the neighbors.

One by one, each member of the family is questioned in hopes of winning more cash (once it is won, it cannot be taken away) and is presented with a large prize only if each question in their series of questions is answered correctly. The contestants are also given the option to buy it for a small price of what it is actually worth and then do not have to worry about answering each individual question correctly. These prizes on Tuesday’s show included all new kitchen appliances, four plasma screen televisions, VIP passes to a Jonas Brothers concert and a 1969 Camaro.

The questions in the show are fun and are sometimes down right embarrassing in an awkwardly great way. For instance, the teenage daughter of the Gutierrez family is confused when four of her best friends are brought onto stage, but soon understands when host J.D. Roth asks her to guess which one of her best friends her older brother has a secret crush on. Watching the older brother squirm was priceless.

To top it off, Roth announces that he would like to see the brother hand a red rose to the girl he secretly idolizes in order to reveal the answer. Interesting questions like this filled the hour-long episode making it a true joy to watch.

J.D. Roth hosts this wildly intriguing take on the tired world of competition television. Roth is a good fit as a game show host and has the energy to keep the show interesting and fun. He has worked previously with Ashton Kutcher on the series “Beauty and the Geek” and was a smart choice by Kutcher for “Knocks.”

After having been exposed to FOX’s “Hole in the Wall” late last week, “Opportunity Knocks” is refreshing and unquestionably going to be a hit for the fall season.
