Voting drive in HSC to continue thru Oct. 6
September 11, 2008
Agustin Henriquez feels he may be part of history in November.
“I think this election, it’s imperative to participate,” he said. “With the economy and the war, this is a very pivotal year for our country.”
Henriquez, a junior marketing major, is one of many students to take advantage of the voter registration table next to TCF Bank in the Holmes Student Center.
The College Democrats are conducting the voter drive.
“We’re from the College Democrats, but we’re serving in a non-partisan capacity to get people to vote,” said Eric Schmack, a senior undecided major and College Dems member. “We’re not endorsing any one candidate.”
The drive has resulted in many new registered voters, said junior English major and College Dems member Bisola Bello.
“We’ve been here since about eight this morning and we’ve had about 70 or 80 [register to vote],” Bello said. “The response has been wonderful.”
Schmack is hopeful the drive will help encourage more young Americans to participate in the democratic process.
“Both candidates are trying to court young voters. If they don’t feel patronized by the candidate they might be [more inclined to vote],” Schmack said. “There may be a feeling that they’re not being adequately represented. Some of the issues that affect us more directly, [students] may not be as well aware of.”
Being able to register in the Student Center should encourage more students to vote, Henriquez said.
“I’m here between classes, so this is a great place to attract students,” he said.
The voter drive will continue through Oct. 6. Students can register at the table in the Holmes Student Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The College Dems are also hoping to add voter drive tables to other locations around campus, Schmack said.
“We usually do voter drives during election years,” he said. “We do more now since elections are getting longer and longer.”
