From the seats:NIU football

By JERRY BURNES

The Red Sea was in full force on Saturday for the Huskies home opener against Indiana State, and it was good to see.

Needless to say the NIU football program did not have a banner season last year, and needed a boost from the home town crowd.

Even before the game started, there was a certain buzz around DeKalb that was missing all last year. Every fan I saw and talked to that day was primed for the game. It brought back memories of the buzz that surrounded Huskie Stadium when Garrett Wolfe was roaming the backfield.

With that said, I have to give credit to the NIU fans. I had my doubts about how many fans would show up and how loud and rowdy the student section would be. I wasn’t disappointed.

I was honestly a little shocked at the overall energy in the stadium. I mean, the team was 2-10 last year and 0-2 before Saturday’s victory. As the season went on last year, attendance dwindled to an embarrassingly low number.

But the Huskies faithful were in full force on Saturday. And why not? NIU was facing a Football Championship Subdivision team that didn’t win one game last year. Odds were in the Huskies’ favor.

My only complaint is a minor scheduling gaffe. I don’t have a problem with parent’s day, but on the opening football game? It really zapped a lot of the potential energy from the crowd, especially on a home opener that meant a little more than usual after Feb. 14.

I complain about this because anytime the masses of students not located on the 50-yard line were standing up and being loud, they were asked to sit down or given looks for being loud.

Really? It’s the student section. It’s kind of the thing to be loud and standing throughout the entire game.

Other than that I can honestly say the fans were exactly what they needed to be during the game. The fans energized the team, who delivered for the home town crowd.

I just hope that we can continue this in October when Miami (Ohio) comes to town, no matter the Huskies’ record. I mean, you’re a student here, tickets are free and if anything it’s just another reason to get outside.

You only have one NIU football team, so keep on supporting them and let’s not gain a reputation around the conference as fair weather fans. Lets not make Huskie Stadium a place where anyone can waltz into and steal a victory.
