A message from the editor in chief

By CAITLIN MULLEN

Welcome to the NIU family!

What you’ve got in your hands is something you’ll have lots of contact with throughout your next few years here — the Northern Star newspaper has been a constant on NIU’s campus since 1899. We provide NIU and local news to students and the community.

The Northern Star, NIU’s independent student-run newspaper, has a circulation of 16,000, and is located in the Campus Life Building, Suite 130. You can find a copy of our daily paper in the dorms, classroom buildings and many local restaurants and shops.

The Northern Star is local — we cover what’s going on at NIU, in DeKalb and in Sycamore; we review local shows and cover Huskie sports; and we address issues specifically related to being a student. The Northern Star is your newspaper. Let us know what you think of it. Send us a letter, or an e-mail to [email protected] with your thoughts on how we’re doing, and what you’d like to see in your paper.

Your classmates are the writers, the designers and the managers of the paper. The Star receives no funding from NIU; we are an independent newspaper funded completely by our student-run advertising department.

If you’re a news junkie and need more than just a daily paper, check out the Northern Star online 24/7. Our Web site, www.northernstar.info, features breaking news, photo slideshows, video reports and comments from student readers just like you.

The Northern Star is an equal opportunity employer, and we have a large staff including reporters, advertising representatives, editors, ad designers and business positions. If you’ve got a passion for news or are interested in ad sales, apply at the Star.

Congratulations on becoming a Huskie, and make the most of your time here at Northern—it goes by quickly!
