Bridgeview hosts B96’s Summer Bash
June 16, 2008
Chicago’s hits & hip-hop station, 96.3 B96, brought it to Bridgeview on Saturday to host its annual Summer Bash concert at Toyota Park.
Over 20,000 fans crammed into the venue where the Chicago Fire usually play to hear an eclectic mix of pop, hip-hop, dance and R&B music. The concert, which lasted nearly six hours, is a yearly tradition in Chicago that has been going on for 15 years.
Headliner and multi-platinum recording artist T-Pain took the stage at the end of the night to an audience that was rapidly dropping in numbers, but those that remained were “treated” to an hour long set that was filled with top hats, freestyles and energy that only Teddy Pain could deliver.
Once the synthesized singer began performing 20-second variations of all the hooks and choruses he’s been on over the past year, the show became a parody of itself. It’s not hard to understand why everyone hates “ringtone rappers” now, as T-Pain performed snippets of bad songs, when he has a library big enough to produce a single good one.
The show ended with variations of “Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin’),” and “I’m So Hood,” which had the remaining audience members standing on chairs, spilling their warm beer as they tried to get their last jukes in of the night.
Also on the lineup was the female-fronted and Diddy-produced, Danity Kane. Although they only performed three songs, it was three too many as their hits “Showstopper” and “Damaged” were totally overshadowed by the lap dances they gave to random audience members. How these five women made it to No. 1 is mind boggling.
Rappers Pitbull and Flo Rida were surprisingly good, as they ventured off the beaten trail of their mainstream hits like “Low,” and “The Anthem” and actually performed a decent set.
Flo Rida was bleeding sweat as he was dripping onto the crowd after 30 minutes into his set. Pitbull was probably one of the better artists of the night, and although he isn’t a lyrical genius, his music will get anyone out of their seats.
Everyone’s favorite sibling of Brandy, Ray J, also performed to the screams of females throughout the packed stadium. Fronted only by the strong showing of “Sexy Can I,” Ray J was more concerned about pulling his underwear down than actually having a decent stage presence. But then again, what can someone who dated Kim Kardashian actually be capable of?
Rounding out the artists was the unentertaining Natasha Beddingfield, who opened, and the ridiculous Jesse McCartney. Beddingfield performed to a crowd that was more interested in buying $11 beers. McCartney, on the other hand received one of the biggest ovations of the night because of all the screaming females.
B96’s Summer Bash was an experience – to say the least, even filled with moderate celebrities such as Joey from “The Real World: Hollywood,” Devin Hester and even Eddie and JoBo of B96’s popular morning show!
While it may have not been the greatest concert in the world, it was thoroughly entertaining for the whole six hours the show lasted. If you can stand the heat, the massive amount of people, and the loudest pop music you’ve ever heard, then B96’s Summer Bash is right up your alley. If not, it’s comparable to hell on earth.
