Meals For Moms luncheon will help raise money for Meals on Wheels
April 30, 2008
The Voluntary Action Center (VAC) is hosting its first Meals for Moms on May 5 at Blumen Gardens in Sycamore, 403 Edward St.
The luncheon is being held to raise money for Meals on Wheels. VAC’s Ellen Rogers said it is a chance for people to celebrate Mother’s Day early.
Rogers wants people to ask themselves what their mothers would want them to do.
“Meals on Wheels is actually more than just reaching low-income seniors; it’s as much about good neighboring,” Rogers said. “Certainly, a good share of our folks are moms.”
The mom theme covers everything from the placemats – featuring television moms such as Marge Simpson and June Cleaver – to raffle prizes, including an autographed picture of the Brady Bunch. The menu is also mom-approved.
“Soup and sandwiches are very balanced, something our mothers would approve of,” Rogers said.
Local and state officials, including the mayors of DeKalb and Sycamore, will be waiting tables.
“This is a wonderful way to put these folks to work for a good cause,” event chair Alice Freier said.
One celebrity waiter is DeKalb County Clerk Sharon Holmes. Holmes has delivered Meals on Wheels and helped at other VAC events. She said this is a chance for her to give back to her community.
“We don’t want to lose these programs for a lack of funding,” Holmes said. “It’s very important to get involved in the community where you’re living.”
