DeKalb offers plenty to those who stay for summer

If you are anything like most students, once you complete finals, you’ll pack up your belongings, leave DeKalb and return home.
But if you find yourself in the small fraction of students who stay in DeKalb over the summer, I have two words for you: Don’t panic.
I know a summer in DeKalb isn’t appealing for most, and if I could sum up DeKalb in the summer with two words, they’d be: Be resourceful. Most times, with a little effort, you can find things to do.
The first thing I suggest is to get involved with the university.
One great opportunity I looked into is a program the English department put together called NIU Muggle Academy: an interdisciplinary Harry Potter camp. This camp runs from July 13-18 and focuses on teaching regular school subjects through the lens of the “Harry Potter” series. It is a unique experience, and volunteers are still needed. If you are planning on becoming a teacher, this camp could be highly beneficial and satisfying.
Another idea for a summer in DeKalb is to explore. Have you been stuck in the dorms all semester and haven’t wanted to wait for the bus to go out? Now that consistently pleasant weather is upon us, here’s your chance.
I highly recommend checking out downtown DeKalb. There are a lot of shops, bars and restaurants to keep even the most avid mind busy. In particular, I suggest checking out the vintage clothing stores, and DeKalb’s rock house. The House Café has scheduled shows all throughout the summer. If you’re hard up for something to do, let music be your guide.
Another great way to keep busy over the summer is to find a volunteer position. You’d be surprised how many places are thirsting for help. Volunteering over the summer can pass the time and be a great resumé builder as well. You never know; perhaps volunteering at an art school or at an animal shelter could open doors for you later in life.
DeKalb is also about an hour away from Chicago. Although the mention of a road trip by a friend may bring you to cringe with gas being so expensive, it is always an option that doesn’t necessarily have to be ruled out. Don’t think twice about packing up and heading to the city for the day, and if you can’t find something to do in Chicago, you are beyond help.
From shopping on Michigan Avenue to soaking up the sun on North Avenue Beach, you can easily have a fun and fulfilling day.
I understand staying in a college town over the summer may not be as exciting as Vegas on your 21st, but if you’re going to stay in DeKalb this summer, you may as well make the best of it.
