Flick Pick: ‘Red Dragon’ (2002)

By PATRICK BATTLE

Director: Brett Ratner

Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Edward Norton, Ralph Fiennes

Plot: A remake of the less-inspiring 1986 Michael Mann film, “Manhunter,” (no pun intended … I think), “Red Dragon” reintroduces us to the charismatic, psychotic Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter.

Lecter aids the agent who caught him (Norton) in bringing down a vicious serial murderer with some serious emotional problems (Fiennes). Though it may not hit as hard as “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991), Ratner and a star-studded cast easily outdo Mann and his original, as well as Ridley Scott’s forgettable brain feast “Hannibal” (2001). “Red Dragon” is proof that Ratner has potential as a director — as long as Chris Tucker stays out of the picture.
