Well… It has happened again. Your DeKalb City Council once again believes the NIU student population, staff and DeKalb community are made out of money.

As reported in the Northern Star, this past Monday night, the city council reconsidered the sales and motor fuel increases passed in March. Seventh Ward Alderman Brent Keller and 1st Ward Alderman Bertrand Simpson joined 6th Ward Alderman David Baker in voting against the tax increase this time. However, the other four aldermen voted to keep it in place (Gorski, Povlsen, Naylor and Wogen).

This increases the city’s sales tax rate to eight percent and increases the two-cent per gallon motor fuel tax (plus you are paying a sales tax on gasoline). You can help put an end to this never-ending “tax and spend” cycle initiated by your elected representatives.

Get involved with the REVOKE Home Rule Referendum Campaign in DeKalb. Revoking Home Rule will force the city council to come to the taxpayers with a referendum for any and all future Tax Increases. We need volunteers to get involved.

The next informational meeting is at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Best Western Inn (1212 W. Lincoln Highway) in DeKalb.

The next organizational meeting will be held next Tuesday at noon, at the DeKalb County Online office; 248 Palmer Court in DeKalb. (Brown bag lunch.)
