Fresno State’s swimming and diving program welcome former NIU coach

By NORTHERN STAR STAFF

Football assistant coach P.J. Fleck wasn’t the first NIU coach with that last name.

While the former wide receiver was a student-athlete, Jeanne Fleck was coaching both the NIU men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs.

The 1999-2000 season was the last for Fleck at NIU, as she was then hired by Ohio State.

However, after nine seasons as a Buckeye, Fleck will move on again. She accepted the head coaching job for the Fresno State University women’s swimming and diving program.

Fresno State discontinued its women’s swimming and diving program after the 2003-04 season.

In her eight years as coach at NIU, Fleck’s team set 18 school records. In 1999 – her final season as coach – she was named MAC Coach of the Year. She also had four swimmers named conference swimmers of the year during her tenure.
