Huntley teacher receives show of support over departure

By ORLANDO LARA

A Huntley Middle School orchestra teacher received an overwhelming show of support at Tuesday’s District 428 Board of Education meeting.

One middle-school girl told the board of she and her fellow classmates’ shock and anger after learning Amanda Nelson’s contract would not be renewed for the upcoming school year.

A dozen students went before the board to express their gratitude and appreciation for Nelson’s teaching abilities.

Another girl read an essay she wrote praising Nelson’s ability to completely turn around a struggling orchestra program into a state-competing program.

Many parents were prepared to go in front of the board to support Nelson’s contract extension, but were informed before the meeting began that one representative would have to be chosen and would only be allowed three minutes to speak. The board showed little objection in allowing two of Nelson’s students speak.

Before speaking to the board, the students handed a petition filled with signatures requesting Nelson’s contract be extended.

After the board ended its discussion on Nelson’s contract, her supporters left the room.

Karen Mink was also introduced as the new principal of Jefferson Elementary School. She will become principal effective July 1.
