Sigma Pi took the rope, and then the win.

With a crowd of over 100 cheering and standing fans, Sigma Pi beat the team of Phi Psi and Pi Kappa Phi.

Sigma Pi won the first of three matches scheduled for Wednesday’s Tug Events after losing to Tau Kappa Epsilon on Monday.

“I think we did great,” said Bryan Harris, president of Sigma Pi and senior marketing major, “It just came together, everyone listened to the callers.”

This was Sigma Pi’s first time competing in Tugs since 2005.

“It was always a big tradition in our house and it got lost, but this is the first step to us bringing it back,” said Mike Sicuro, Sigma Pi’s team coach, one of the callers and senior marketing major.

Both Harris and Sicuro said that they had good competitors who put a lot of effort in the match.

Pikes, Phi Sigs advance

In the day’s second match, Pi Kappa Alpha (Pikes), the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, beat the team of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) and Alpha Kappa Lambda (AKL) to advance to the championship match.

They will face Phi Sigma Kappa (Phi Sigs), who beat Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) in Wednesday’s final match.

The championship match is scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday. A third place match between SAE/AKL and TKE will start at 4:30 p.m. Sig Nu and Sig Phi will start Saturday off at 3 p.m. with the match for fifth place.

Greeks support greeks

Other greek organizations came out and showed their support for their fellow greeks including Amy Zavala, senior history major and Sigma Kappa member.

“I’m obsessed with Tugs because I tug for our team in the fall,” Zavala said. “I love watching it and it’s an intense sport.”

Zavala said she was most excited to see the Pikes and Phi Sigs compete since they were predicted to make it to the title game, which they did.

Tickets for Saturday’s matches are on sale for $10. All proceeds from the event will be going to the NIU Feb. 14 Student Scholarship Fund.
