The NIU and DeKalb area will experience heavy amounts of rain later this week, which may cause flooding.

According to the online weather forecast by Gilbert Sebenste, NIU staff meteorologist, there will be cloudy weather this morning with sun in the afternoon and a high temperature of 51 degrees. He said there is no rain expected this morning, but the skies will not stay clear for long.

Sebenste reports that heavy rain fall is expected for the rest of the week.

The online weather forecast expects clouds with heavy rains and thunderstorms for Thursday. The thunderstorms will end around midnight.

Up to four inches of rain will develop by Thursday night, increasing the possibility of flooding for the Kishwaukee River. The forecast says the river could get quite high.

Joel Maurer, DeKalb city engineer, said the city watches and observes the Kishwaukee River.

“We monitor the river levels,” Maurer said. “We become aware if sandbagging is needed.”

Maurer said the problem area for flooding is on Taylor Street, near Lions Park.

The properties around the river are low-standing and are built on a flood plain, which means they are very susceptible to flooding, Maurer said.
