‘Heart Shaped Hate’ discusses love for thrashing
March 18, 2008
For those who might not find the prospects of rising indie-rock band Crystal Castles appealing enough, Heart Shaped Hate is opening for them tonight at the House Café.
Heart Shaped Hate is a two-piece “pink metal” outfit, with NIU students Natali Wiseman on vocals and synthesizers, and Jenna Horwath on drums. Listening to these girls play is probably best described as a sugar buzz in a room full of chain saws.
The Northern Star spoke with Wiseman to see what she had to say.
Northern Star: How would you describe your band to someone who has not heard you?
Natali Wiseman: We sound like two girls screaming and throwing tantrums on analog synthesizers, grind drums and disco beats. We like to call it “pink metal.” If we’re feeling sassy, we wear shiny outfits.
NS: How would you describe your band to a concert-goer who is wondering if they should come early to the Crystal Castles show?
NW: Everyone should come see Crystal Castles for sure, because they are totally, totally rad and thrashy. We got to play with them last May, and it was a giant, sweaty, awesome dance party. We like to thrash a little too, but I suppose in a different way. I think a lot of people are stoked about seeing them, so getting there early would be a plus.
NS: So, when do you plan on releasing something for us to listen to on our headphones?
NW: As of now, we are almost done with a six-song EP. We are hoping it will come out in May [or] early summer on our friends’ label, Cassette Deck Media Conglomerate. We are also going to release a [split seven-inch record] with The Most Genuine Expression some time after that.
