Burnin’ hot wings part of restaurant’s challenge

Up for a spicy challenge? One can test his or her taste buds by doing the Blazin’ Challenge at Buffalo Wild Wings, 2466 Sycamore Road.

The challenge calls for one to eat 12 boned wings smothered in Buffalo Wild Wings’ spiciest sauce in six minutes or fewer.

The catch? The participant must face the blazin’ wings solo, which is stated in the liability waiver and required to be signed by the challenger.

“Doing it was fun but I paid for it afterward; my lips burned really bad,” said freshman accounting major Justin Goestenkors, who successfully completed the challenge a few weeks ago. “Eventually I’ll do it again because it was worth getting a T-shirt and my picture on the wall.”

There are a variety of reasons why one cannot, or chooses not to, finish the challenge.

“I wasn’t eating fast enough and I got caught up watching Justin do it faster,” said freshman history major Jesse Sertle.

Regardless, repeat challengers go back to try again or even beat their previous time.

“It’s amazing because we get repeat customers who want to try and beat their time,” said Cathy Inderhees, a manager at the DeKalb Buffalo Wild Wings. “We don’t make it easy.”

Sertle has attempted the Blazin’ Challenge twice and has yet to complete it, but remains confident that the third time is a charm.

“I’ll be back in a couple weeks,” Sertle said.

There are currently 51 pictures of challenge winners on the “wall of fame,” which fails to signify the numerous people who attempt the challenge.

Aaron Baker, senior math major and waiter at Buffalo Wild Wings in DeKalb, said he’s seen “enough” people attempt the Blazin’ Challenge, adding that he would never try to complete the challenge himself.

After attempting or completing the challenge, chances are one is left feeling the after-effects of the blazin’ sauce.

“We get a lot of people who we later find out were sick in the bathroom for a while,” Inderhees said.

After his latest attempt, all Sertle could say was, “My stomach is killing me.”

The fastest time of completion of Buffalo Wild Wing’s Blazin’ Challenge in DeKalb is 56 seconds, Inderhees said.
