Track of the Day: ‘Cheer Up!’ by Reel Big Fish

By JEN HANCE

Roaring trumpets, wailing saxophones and a swingin’ trombone combined with a rock band is not only a surprisingly wonderful blend of genres, but something that will undoubtedly put a smile on anyone’s face.

It seems only fitting to have a week of this infectious music to lift spirits and feelings on campus.

Back in the mid-’90s, when ska was part of the music scene, Reel Big Fish made its debut. Ever since then, the band has been cranking out songs, releasing albums and playing shows, just like the old days.

With songs that not only have great riffs, but silly topics (such as tastelessly unfashionable tube tops, why all girls think they are fat and wanting someone else’s girlfriend), it’s easy to understand how this band is able to stand the test of time.

“Cheer Up!” is a song I play when I am down in the dumps and can’t seem to find my way out. The band makes me smile with the catchy, up beat music, great vocals and sarcastic lyrics that just beg to be shouted at the top of your lungs.

After being cooped up all winter, and with all the stresses students have to deal with, it is nice to listen to something that kicks you out of your seat and gets you dancing.

With the weather finally warming up and the sun finally making its appearance known, this is the perfect song to to blare with the windows rolled down to remind yourself and your friends that it is time to “Cheer Up!”
