New assisted-living center to open in July

A supportive living facility will be opening this summer in DeKalb.

Located on Annie Glidden Road between Dresser and Bethany roads, Heritage Woods is an affordable assisted-living facility for residents 65 years or older.

The facility is scheduled to open in the beginning of July.

Susan Vasquez, director of marketing for Heritage Woods, said they are already accepting applications for the new living facility.

“It has 76 apartments altogether with half of them being studios and the other half one-bedrooms,” she said.

Heritage Woods differs from other assisted-living facilities in that it offers affordable assistance for residents that need it.

“Affordable assistance is given through Medicaid that helps residents who need some financial help,” Vasquez said.

Residents who live there can pay a portion of their rent and get help with the rest from the government.

“Because the area is aging, as well as society in general, there is a huge need to provide services to the community that doesn’t have much income or funds,” she said.

Ziv Sabin, executive director of Elder Care services in DeKalb, said that Elder Care tries to keep the older part of the community in their homes as long as possible but when that is no longer an option, assisted-living facilities are essential.

“I think it’s extremely important by giving those who need 24/7 care an alternative to those who can’t live in their home anymore,” she said.
