Charity meals offer way to eat cheap, help community

Trying to find places to eat on the weekends for a reasonable price in DeKalb is not as hard as it sounds.

But not only can people get great meals for good prices, but also they can also help out the community by donating money to charities.

The DeKalb Masonic Lodge, at the intersection of Fairview Drive and Fourth Street, offers an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast every Sunday morning from 7:30 to 11 a.m.

The food offered varies from pancakes, eggs, sausage, toast and biscuits and gravy.

The Trinity Lutheran Church, 303 S. Seventh St., hosts a monthly all-you-can-eat breakfast on the third Saturday of every month for a $6 donation.

Sycamore Veterans of Foreign Wars, 121 S. California St., is holding a pasta dinner Saturday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. that costs $7.

Mary Drake, volunteer and wife of a veteran, said the dinner is held to raise money for the Sycamore war veterans.

“We are trying to have these dinners at least twice a year, with the money going to veterans,” she said.

The dinner will include spaghetti, mostaccioli, lasagna, salad and garlic bread.

In DeKalb, NIU Knights of Columbus offers a fish dinner on the second Friday of every month and a weekly dinner during Lent on Fridays.

The dinners are held at the Newman Catholic Center, 512 Normal Road, and run from 5 to 7 p.m. Lenny French, member of the Knights of Columbus, said this has become recent tradition.

“We’ve been doing this dinner for the last few years with the money for the meals going to youth foundations and various charities,” he said.

Some of the food served are grilled cheese sandwiches, tilapia and shrimp skewers.

The meal prices range from $5 to $7 and are served with bread, salad and a dessert.
