Truck burns at Waste Management facility

A garbage truck was found on fire Wednesday night at the Waste Management facility, 115 Simonds Ave.

At 9:53 p.m. the DeKalb Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the facility and discovered heavy smoke in the maintenance garage. A garbage truck was found burning inside the garage and was extinguished in a half-hour, according to a DeKalb Fire Department press release.

The fire caused an estimated $20,000 in damage to the truck and water and smoke damage to the building, said DeKalb Fire Chief Lanny Russell.

Russel said arson is not thought to be the cause and the fire may have been caused by the truck itself.

The Fire Department still needs to talk to the mechanics, he said, and the fire is still being investigated by the DeKalb Fire Investigation Bureau.

No civilians or firefighters were injured during the fire, the release says.

No employees were at the facility during the fire, Russell said.

Sycamore and Cortland Fire Departments were also called to the scene.
