Upcoming Movie Previews (Part 1)
December 4, 2007
“Juno” – Dec. 5 (limited)
Jason Reitman’s satirical masterpiece “Thank You For Smoking” is followed by this melancholic film with an all-star cast. A girl gets pregnant by her best friend and ultimately must decide what to do with her baby and with love.
We also get an “Arrested Development” reunion of sorts with Michael Cera and Jason Bateman sharing the screen again. This will be a must-see.
“Charlie Wilson’s War” – Dec. 25
What do you get when you mix Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Philip Seymour Hoffman and director Mike Nichols? You get a true story about the Cold War from the eyes of a Texas congressman. This film has Oscar written all over it, yet the trailers have been mildly disappointing.
If this were a decade ago, Hanks and Roberts together on-screen would have been the biggest duo in years. We can only hope Philip Seymour Hoffman can bring his trademark supporting character game and make the movie worthwhile.
“The Bucket List” – Dec. 25
When there are no more roles left as a crime boss or God, Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman will finally play their age. The two are cancer patients who set out to accomplish goals they have before they kick the bucket.
With Rob Reiner directing, this probably looked good on paper. But the first trailer is abysmal, with a ridiculous looking computer generated Morgan Freeman skydiving.
“There Will Be Blood” – Dec. 26 (limited)
Paul Thomas Anderson is already a legend in Hollywood after only a couple films.
“Hard Eight,” “Boogie Nights,” “Magnolia” and “Punch-Drunk Love” are instant classics containing Anderson’s unique visions. His newest endeavor is an adaptation of an Upton Sinclair story about an oil tycoon, portrayed by Daniel Day-Lewis.
Let us not forget, the last time Lewis starred in a period piece, he brought Bill The Butcher to life in “Gangs of New York.” “There Will Be Blood” is easily the most anticipated film of the season.
“Cassandra’s Dream” – Jan. 4
Woody Allen follows up his rekindled passion for drama after “Match Point” with this tale of two Cockney brothers who vie for the affection of one woman.
Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor are interesting choices, but the more amusing aspect will be whether or not Allen can pull off another great suspense film.
