Man jumps out window to avoid police

An area man jumped out of a second-story window Friday to avoid DeKalb police.

At 10:30 p.m., police saw a person who was known to have a parole warrant driving in the 2500 block of North Annie Glidden Road, said Lt. Gary Spangler of the DeKalb Police Department.

Police followed the driver, who the officer knew from previous contacts as Tony Martin, 27, with no listed address, and attempted to pull the car over, Spangler said.

The car continued for several blocks on Annie Glidden and turned west onto the Bethany Road extension before pulling over. The officer told Martin to turn off the car.

Martin yelled that the car was off. Police noticed Martin’s car was still running and the car then accelerated away on Bethany Road, Spangler said.

Spangler said police followed Martin, who was driving at a high rate of speed in the wrong lane, passed two cars and ran a stop sign.

Police followed Martin and saw him drive into Eden Gardens sub-division on Twombly Road, Spangler said. Police then found Martin’s car running and abandoned on Soros Court. Police saw Martin running behind several houses, but lost sight of him.

Shortly after, the DeKalb Police Department received a call from a resident in the 1200 block of Omega Circle saying someone was in her backyard. Police found an open door on a house under construction in the area on Omega Circle.

Officers searched the house and heard noise on the second floor of the building, Spangler said. When officers checked the second floor, they found an open window where it is believed Martin jumped out.

A K-9 unit from Genoa was called to assist in the search, but Martin was unable to be located, Spangler said.

During the pursuit, the owner of the vehicle Martin was driving called the police department and reported the vehicle as stolen.

After the chase, while officers were talking to the owner of the vehicle, she received a call on her cell phone from someone claiming to be Martin saying he was in Chicago and he would turn himself in after 45 minutes, which Martin never did, Spangler said.

Martin has a parole violation warrant from the Department of Corrections, Spangler said, and charges are pending for fleeing and eluding police in addition to traffic violations.

Spangler said the victim knew Martin and it was not a random car theft.
