Two DeKalb residents were arrested while allegedly trying to commit a burglary early Monday morning.
At 12:13 a.m., DeKalb Police found a burglary in progress at a residence in the 500 block of West Taylor Street. The suspects broke out a window of the residence and a vehicle parked in the driveway, said Lt. Gary Spangler of the DeKalb Police Department. The suspects were unable to enter the residence or vehicle.
The suspects, Shawn H. Wennlund, 29, of DeKalb and Cedric J. Salgado, 37, of DeKalb, were stopped in their vehicle, attempting to leave the scene. Burglary tools were found in the suspects’ vehicle and an investigation showed the suspects intended to burglarize both the vehicle and the residence, according to a DeKalb Police Department press release.
Wennlund is charged with attempted residential burglary, attempted burglary, possession of burglary tools and criminal damage to property. Salgado is charged with attempted residential burglary and attempted burglary.
Wennlund is currently on parole and has an extensive criminal history, including arrests for drugs and other property crimes, Spangler said. Salgado also has a criminal history, Spangler said.
Both suspects are believed to be responsible for other residential burglaries in DeKalb, according to the release.
“We had information both these subjects had committed other residential burglaries in the DeKalb area, which helped officers in spotting these subjects when they attempted to commit these burglaries,” Spangler said.
