Fashion line strives to rid anti-black stereotypes

Six men have a goal to deliver consciousness to a lost generation.
The movement of the fashion label dangerousNEGRO, started by six black men in 2005 in Nashville, Tenn., has now spread to many cities, including Chicago and DeKalb. The line creates T-shirts with catchy phrases that seek to break down stereotypes that have been associated with African-Americans.
Kyle McGhee, a junior fashion textiles major, is a strong force in the DeKalb movement. Kyle serves as an intern for the company.
“It’s refreshing to know that there are people out there that collaborate in efforts to educate masses of people in a creative and innovative way,” McGhee said.
McGhee is in charge of the marketing and public relations of dangerousNEGRO for Chicago and DeKalb.
“dangerousNEGRO the clothing line allows those to be educated through fashion,” McGhee said. “This clothing line sparks future monarchs and other fashion lines to come.”
One of the founders of dangerousNEGRO, Gary Mavindidze, is a senior marketing major at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
Mavindidze said he got involved with dangerousNEGRO because he was fed up with the media’s portrayal of the African-American culture.
“I couldn’t find any positive clothing. I can now be stylish and proud to wear empowering clothing,” Mavindidze said. “We are smashing stereotypes through clothing.”
The T-shirts are printed with phrases intended to empower African-American youth, with shirts including sayings such as “mart is the new gangsta,” “Absolute Awareness empowers absolutely” and “Young. Gifted. Black.”
Although the clothes seek to empower the African-American race, the line’s goal is to empower all youth. dangerousNEGRO is for everyone, not only black people, McGhee said.
“I want people to know that this is a way for us to bridge gaps,” McGhee said. “Anyone who is concerned about the state of affairs in the black community can help.”
McGhee is excited about the fashion line and his own up-and-coming fashion line as well.
“dangerousNEGRO is comprised of well-organized, mannered group of black men who have created a blueprint that will serve many,” McGhee said. “As a fashion designer I aspire to be as great as them.”
